The Brilliant Lady

May 2004 saw the launch of the Brilliant Lady 21. To say that this cut is multifaceted would be an understatement, as it features no fewer than 221 facets. Louis Verelst, a veteran diamond cutter based in Zandhoven
with the design several years ago. To introduce the cut commercially, he joined forces with the Antwerp-based diamantaire Pierre Adler. Their collaboration proves that in the diamond trade, vertical integration is no buzzword but an essential formula for ensuring the continuity of Belgium’s diamond manufacturing base.

The Brilliant Lady 21 is extraordinary in that it displays 100 tiny facets on the girdle, adding extra sparkle where it is least expected. The crown features 56 facets and the pavilion 64. By way of comparison, a regular full-cut round brilliant has 58 facets, including the culet.

Verelst is a typical manufacturer. Now 56 and owner of his own cutting firm,he has been at the wheel since he was 13. His firm specializes in fancy shapes, but also occasionally cuts rounds. "Give me a design and I’ll cut it," he said. A new cut is most often achieved through trial and error, he said. "One can very well make all the drawings and calculations one wants, but when the actual result is not pleasing to the eye, nothing has been achieved."

"We are marketing the Brillant Lady 21 as an exclusive ‘Made in Antwerp’ diamond," said Adler. "We already have downstream interest from jewelry chains abroad, and I can assure you that this Lady will truly be an ambassador for the excellence of diamond cutting in Antwerp." The range of sizes, colors and clarities will depend on market demand, Adler added.

Up to 12 cutters are working full time turning out Brilliant Ladies, and the HRD CertificatesDepartment has begun issuing grading reports which mention the proprietary design.
